Need your own set of wheels when you’re traveling?

If you need hand controls or other modifications, there are important questions you need to ask. “Most rental car companies have hand controls that can be installed into practically any one of their vehicles,” shares Scott Chesney, experienced traveler. “Be sure to ask what kind of hand controls they offer.” Make sure they have the type you need and specify what side you need it installed on. The best part is that there is no additional fee! Some companies may also be able to provide steering knobs, transfer benches and swivel seats. If you need an accessible van, there are a growing number of companies that have this option. However, be aware that you should make your reservation at least two weeks in advance to ensure they can prepare the car you need.
