If you aspire to be as independent as possible, there’s a lot of small adaptations you can learn from someone like Chris Colwell. This C5-6 quadriplegic, who has no finger function, has adapted his routine getting ready for bed including washing, shaving, flossing, and brushing teeth, all independently!

His demo kicks off with washing his hands, everything from rolling up his sleeves to working the sink and rinsing his hands.

Jump to 1:19 to see how Chris works his electric razor for a shave, including how he grips the razor without moving his fingers.

Jump to 3:21 to see his adapted device he uses to floss his teeth that maximizes what he’s able to do with his mobility.

All that’s left after that is to brush! Jump to 4:59 to see how he opens a tube of toothpaste and gets brushing with an electric toothbrush. Don’t miss how to rinse!

His whole routine takes less than 8 minutes and is shot in real time, giving you a clear sense of how it all works. Watch his demo:

Whether you’re washing, brushing, flossing, brushing teeth or any other personal hygiene task, learn from others and look for creative hacks! There’s a way to figure out how to do it.

What can you do independently that you are most proud of? Share your accomplishment and we may feature it!
