Ahmet Cunmulaj, a T5 paraplegic, shares videos on his YouTube channel (WheelzAC) demonstrating how he accomplishes different independent living skills.

In the video below, Ahmet shares his ability to transfer in and out of his shower with minimal accommodations.

Accommodations To Shower

Ahmet says his shower is not like the average wheelchair accessible shower. He wanted very few accommodations made to the shower to fit his needs. For instance, instead of the six-inch step into the shower, Ahmet had his contractor lower the step to two inches. He also only has one grab bar in the front wall of the shower as opposed to bars on two walls.

Ahmet uses a shower chair and shower head with a hose.

Transfer In/Out Of Shower

Ahmet makes transferring in and out of the shower look easy as he pops a wheelie to get into the shower. With his entire wheelchair in the shower, he pulls up next to the shower chair and does a quick pivot transfer from chair to chair.

Sitting in the shower chair, Ahmet backs his wheelchair up to where his back wheels are out of the shower while his front wheels are still over the step into the shower. After he showers, Ahmet dries his body off with a towel while he sits in the shower chair. Bringing his wheelchair forward, Ahmet then will put the towel on his wheelchair cushion and do another quick pivot transfer back into his wheelchair.

Ahmet then slowly backs out of the shower and over the two-inch step.
