Ahmet Cunmulaj, a paraplegic, shares videos on his YouTube channel (Wheelz AC) demonstrating how he accomplishes certain independent living skills tasks.

Ahmet shares a video showing how he opens outwards and forward facing doors from his wheelchair.

Opening Outward Facing Door

Ahmet demonstrates how to go about opening a door that opens outwards. He suggests using momentum to open the door.

“So, roll into (the door) and push.”

Ahmet does a few hard pushes on his wheels to gain speed and when he reaches the door he holds his arm out to push the door open.

Ahmet states to keep in mind to have your wheel against the door so the door will not close on you.

Opening Forward Facing Door

Ahmet states that to open a forward facing door he pushes up to the door, grabs the door handle and uses force to push off the door handle. By still holding on to the door handle as he does this, Ahmet is able to open the door.

Ahmet positions his wheel against the door so that it will not close on him.

Ahmet states it is important to learn how to open doors by yourself because there may be times when the push button for the door is not working or a store simply does not have one.
