Gareth is a C6 quadriplegic who enjoys living life to the fullest.
"Keeping fit and healthy is extremely important to me as it allows me to retain my independence and gives me freedom to live my life the way I want to. However, my injury means that I have no real grip in either of my hands and struggle to hold all but the lightest of items."
Get a Better Grip When Working Out
Gareth says he found himself frustrated with not being able to get in a proper workout at the gym due to his inability to grip much of the weight lifting equipment. But then he found a product that changed the way he worked out: Active Hands, a company that creates products specifically for people with limited hand function.
"I purchased one of their gym packs which has everything you need in order to access the various weights, apparatus and machines at the gym, things such as; dumbbells, handbike, rowing machine, pulley machines etc.," says Gareth.
Active Hands' General Purpose Gripping Aid slips over the user's hand and is held in place with strong Velcro. Here's the steps Gareth follows:
- To attach the grip I simply slip it over my hand
- Then I put a finger from my other hand through the loop and pull it tight before sealing the Velcro
- Now I put whatever I want to grip into my palm, and use my other hand to push the second loop through the buckle
- Last, I use my finger to once again pull it tight and seal it with Velcro
It’s that simple!
The General Purpose Gripping Aid can be used for a variety of purposes, like gripping household items from gardening tools to kitchen equipment. And Gareth says it is both comfortable to wear and durable - he's had his General Purpose Gripping Aid for several years!
"I think it’s absolutely awesome that products like this exist as they have such a huge impact and make such a massive difference to people’s lives."
