Shane Burcaw is an author who was born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. His latest book, Strangers Assume My Girlfriend Is My Nurse is a collection of short stories from his day to day life as a person living with a neuromuscular disease.

The stories range from topics like dating and relationships to the absurd things that strangers seemingly think are appropriate to say to a person who uses a wheelchair.

As a fellow person with a disability and wheelchair user, almost every story in Strangers Assume My Girlfriend Is My Nurse resonated with me in some way. I found myself chuckling and shaking my head in agreement as I read each chapter.

“Shane’s authentic style of writing and witty sense of humor makes for a great read!”

Other readers are saying Strangers Assume My Girlfriend Is My Nurse has a “positive outlook” and Shane’s writing is “down to earth and real.”

Shane’s stories at first glance are light-hearted glimpses of daily occurrences for a person who uses a wheelchair. However, readers are left with a deeper meaning of life with each chapter.

This book challenges stereotypes that society tends to put on people with disabilities.
